What Is a NIE Number?
NIE stands for Número de Identidad de Extranjero — your Spanish foreigner ID number. It's required for almost everything official in Spain.
- Required to buy property
- Required to open a bank account
- Required for utility contracts
- Required for tax & mortgage
- It's permanent — you keep it for life
How to Apply for Your NIE
Two main routes depending on where you are.
- Option 1: In Spain — at a National Police station with Extranjería office
- Option 2: Abroad — at the Spanish consulate in your country
- You can also use a lawyer/gestor to do it for you
- Cost: ~€15 (plus service fee if using a gestor)
Documents You'll Need
Prepare these before applying:
- Completed EX-15 form
- Valid passport + copy
- Passport-size photo
- Proof of reason for NIE (e.g. property reservation)
